With everyone looking to slow things down a little and perhaps save some money in the process, we have decided to help you find free things to do in and around Toronto. This is the first in an occasional series where we highlight free local stuff for you to enjoy.

Imagine this: Seeing a professional sports team without paying a cent. When you read that your mind probably created an image of a giant black hole because free and professional sports never go together. However, Toronto is home to a professional baseball team that is absolutely 100% free to watch.

The Toronto Maple Leafs play in the Canadian Baseball League, which rebranded from the Intercounty Baseball League and moved to a full professional model this year. Not to be confused with the Stanley Cup averse hockey Maple Leafs, these home-run slugging Leafs have been around in some form since 1896. Their latest iteration has played at Dominico Field located in Christie Pits park since 1969. The park is accessed easily from Christie Subway Station. With no gates or ticket booths it’s possible to just walk up the diamond and sit in the bleachers or on the grass when the team is playing.

When we went the game was entertaining with a lot of runs scored (possibly due to the fact that more errors were made). Drinks, provided by Left Field Brewery, are all under $9. The concession offers simple ball park hot dogs and an interesting dish called a “Walking Taco”, pictured below. However, you are allowed to BYOB and bring in other food if you want to keep the experience as low cost as possible.

If you are looking for a no-frills night of watching sports that is reminiscent of a simpler and slower time, it is hard to beat a night at Christie Pits with Toronto Maple Leafs Baseball. And our ka(+)le after_ comfies made the perfect outfit for the late summer evening where the air started to get a chill and comfort was mandatory.
