Golf Canada's Putting Park

After playing golf for about 6 seasons, I am still surprised by how popular the game is. Courses throughout southern Ontario are generally packed from May until September. In spite of its popularity, costs, time, and a steep learning curve present significant barriers to entry for those interested in the game. It is with this in mind that Golf Canada opened their “Putting Park”, Talon Links in Caledon, Ontario.

Designed by Himalayas Golf, Talon Links does not include elaborate windmills, or other obstacles typical of “Mini-Putt” courses. Instead the course is made to resemble a traditional golf “Links”, winding its way through a landscape of tall grasses planted on mounds around the holes. The holes vary in length and require some strategy to navigate the different dips and bumps in order to make par. The course does a good job of re-creating what it is like to play golf but on a smaller scale that anyone can enjoy.

Perhaps the most surprising thing about the experience is that all of the formalities of golf are stripped away. No need to call ahead or sign up in any way. You are encouraged to walk up, grab a complimentary putter and ball and start on whichever hole is free. The informal scheduling makes it the perfect family activity or last minute date night idea. And best of all, yes, it is free! To top it off, the course features excellent views of the surrounding Caledon Hills.
